What are the various components that make up the air brake control system

Apr 27,2023

Air brake control components are an essential part of any air brake system, which is used in heavy-duty trucks and buses to provide efficient and reliable braking performance. Air brake systems use compressed air to transmit brake signals and apply the brakes, providing more consistent braking than traditional hydraulic braking systems.

Air Compressor - The air compressor is responsible for compressing and supplying the air that is used to operate the brakes. It is typically powered by the engine of the vehicle and is designed to provide a steady supply of compressed air.
Air Reservoirs - Air reservoirs are storage tanks that hold the compressed air that is used to operate the brakes. There are typically two or more reservoirs, which are designed to provide backup air in case of a failure in the primary air supply.
Air Dryer - The air dryer is responsible for removing moisture from the compressed air. Moisture can cause corrosion and damage to the brake system, so it is essential that the air is properly dried before it enters the system.
Air Governor - The air governor is responsible for regulating the air pressure in the system. It is designed to maintain a consistent pressure in the reservoirs, ensuring that there is enough air available to operate the brakes.
Brake Pedal - The brake pedal is the main control for the driver, and it is used to apply the brakes. When the pedal is depressed, it sends a signal to the control valve to apply the brakes.
Control Valve - The control valve is responsible for controlling the flow of air to the brake chambers. It is designed to receive signals from the brake pedal and apply the brakes accordingly.
Brake Chambers - The brake chambers are responsible for converting the compressed air into mechanical force that is used to apply the brakes. There are typically two chambers per wheel, which work together to apply equal pressure to both sides of the brake.
Brake Drums - The brake drums are the components that the brake shoes press against to stop the vehicle. They are typically made of cast iron and are designed to dissipate heat quickly, reducing the risk of brake fade.
