Brake Air Dryer Maintenance Tips

Dec 11,2022

Having a brake air dryer installed in your car can save you time and money on frequent brake repairs. It can also help to keep your brakes operating properly. However, it is important to understand how to maintain it. If you neglect it, it could cost you more money in the long run. Here are some of the tips you need to know to keep your air dryer working at its best.
Charge cycle

Typically, a brake air dryer is paired with a purge reservoir to provide the dry air necessary to maintain the air brake system's psi rating. These devices are a boon to the air brake system, especially during cold weather operations.

A new twist on the classic air dryer and purge reservoir combo is the pairing of the purge volume with the air dryer. A clever design enables a single air dryer/purge reservoir module to handle both functions without a hitch. This is aided by a clever patented fastening system. Rather than relying on air hoses to connect the two, the fasteners thread into openings in the purge volume and air dryer.

As shown in Figure 4, the patented fastener system is cleverly concealed within the housing. This enables the air dryer to handle the purge volume's purge cycle and not the air compressor's charge cycle. Having an air dryer/purge volume combination enables a heavy vehicle's air brake system to recharge itself more efficiently.
Initial purge

During the initial purge for brake air dryer, the system removes water from the desiccant. This is accomplished by backflushing the dryer, which dries the desiccant and vents the moisture to the atmosphere.

The air supply system in the vehicle air braking system includes a reservoir assembly, an air dryer and controller. The reservoir assembly includes a downstream section and an inlet port. The air dryer consists of an air cleaning cartridge and a purge air control valve.

The reservoir assembly is connected to the air dryer by an air line. The size of the orifice in the reservoir affects the amount of compressed air that passes through the system. The reservoir also provides a pressure signal to the purge valve, which actuates the purge valve to start the purge process.
Desiccant cartridge decompression

Using an air dryer for the air brake system can help to prevent costly repair and downtime. When the brake system is not properly maintained, moisture can get into the system and affect the performance and reliability of the brakes.

In order to eliminate moisture from the air system, an air dryer uses a desiccant cartridge. The desiccant removes 95% of the water vapor from compressed air. The desiccant is contained in a cylindrical housing that contains bags.

The desiccant is finely subdivided to improve its effectiveness. The amount of desiccant used for a purge cycle depends on the quantity of moisture removed. It is also important to keep the desiccant clean and fresh. A failure of the desiccant can cause the material to clump and turn into powder.
Checking for moisture in the air brake system

Keeping your air brake system in tip-top shape will help to ensure that your vehicle stops in a timely manner. The system needs to be cleaned out regularly and kept dry.

Water collects in the system and can freeze up when it is cold. During cold winter months, it is especially important to keep the air brake system dry. If the air brake system is frozen, it may be impossible to apply the brakes.

The best way to check for moisture in the air brake system is to test the air-loss rate of the vehicle's brake system. To do this, shut the engine down, release the spring brakes, and test the air-pressure build-up time. If the pressure rises within one minute, the air-brake system is working properly. If the pressure does not rise within one minute, it is possible for the air-brake system to be leaking.
Frequent intervals may be required

Considering your oh so humble nit, you'll be surprised to learn that you have a well insulated air system that keeps your vehicle's occupants cool. The latest in air conditioning technology is touted as the best way to keep your car or truck in tip top shape. The best way to go is to enlist the services of a trained technician. This will save you from having to rely on the good ol' reliable auto repair shop. It's also the smartest way to maintain your nip, tip and glop and ensure your investment is as safe as can be.

The best way to test this out is to call up your local auto repair shop and ask for a complimentary estimate. It's also a good idea to ask if your mechanic is a certified ABQC (accreditable) car technician.
